“The Charlie Chaplin Cavalcade” / 「チャップリン大行進」, Original Japanese Movie Poster c.1960s, Speed Size (c. 26 × 60 cm) ZA1065

Sale price $125.00

This is an original Japanese theatrical speed-size poster printed for the Japanese presentation of The Charlie Chaplin Cavalcade / 「チャップリン大行進」, a feature-length anthology celebrating the silent comedy genius of Charlie Chaplin.

A vibrant tribute to Chaplin’s early screen work, The Charlie Chaplin Cavalcade brings together a selection of his classic short films from the Mutual Film Corporation period, showcasing the physical precision, comic timing, pathos, and visual invention that made Chaplin one of the defining figures of world cinema.

Film background
Originally compiled as an anthology presentation, The Charlie Chaplin Cavalcade features several of Chaplin’s most celebrated silent shorts, including The Floorwalker, The Fireman, The Pawnshop, Behind the Screen, The Rink, and One A.M.

These films capture Chaplin at a crucial stage in the development of his screen persona. His famous Tramp character is presented through a range of comic situations, from department-store chaos and firehouse slapstick to skating routines, pawnshop gags, and brilliantly choreographed physical comedy.

Directed, written, and performed by Charlie Chaplin, the films also feature key Chaplin collaborators including Edna Purviance, Eric Campbell, Albert Austin, and Leo White.

The anthology serves as a compact survey of Chaplin’s early mastery, combining roaring slapstick, emotional tenderness, and remarkable silent-era performance craft.

Poster design
The Japanese poster uses a bold and highly graphic orange composition, with a large black-and-white image of Charlie Chaplin as the Tramp seated at the lower section, loosely bound by a white rope. The image has immediate visual impact, contrasting sharply with the vivid orange ground.

Running down the upper-left section are circular stills from the featured Chaplin shorts, each labelled in Japanese and English. These include:

「チャップリンの酔っぱらい」 / ONE A.M.
THE RINK
THE PAWNSHOP
BEHIND THE SCREEN
THE FIREMAN
THE FLOORWALKER

The far-left yellow vertical band carries the principal Japanese tagline:

「爆笑を呼び哀愁を奏でるチャップリン喜劇の最高傑作集!」
“The ultimate collection of Chaplin comedy masterpieces, bringing roaring laughter and a melody of sorrow.”

The right side is dominated by the large vertical purple katakana title 「チャップリン大行進」, while the English title The Charlie Chaplin Cavalcade appears prominently in bold white lettering across Chaplin’s figure.

The reverse is also printed, with Japanese text and additional stills, adding considerable period interest and giving the piece the quality of both a promotional poster and programme-style theatrical item.

The overall design is bright, playful, and highly evocative of Japanese revival poster art for classic silent cinema.
