“The Crazy Boys at the Supermarket” (クレージー4人組 スーパーマーケット珍作戦), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1974 (film 1973), B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) ZA23
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1974 for the first Japanese cinema release of The Crazy Boys at the Supermarket (released in Japan as クレージー4人組 スーパーマーケット珍作戦), the French comedy Le grand bazar starring the beloved comedy troupe Les Charlots (レ・シャルロ). The film’s Japanese theatrical release date is recorded as 30 March 1974, distributed by Tōwa (東和).
Directed by Claude Zidi, this is a chaotic, high-energy slapstick comedy in which the four “Crazy Boys” take on a big-capital supermarket threatening the local neighbourhood shop—an era-perfect slice of 1970s French comedy that played strongly in Japan during the period.
Poster design
A wonderfully over-the-top Japanese design: exaggerated, cartoonish character heads burst from the composition with manic expressions, while a motorcycle and an overflowing supermarket trolley crash through a stylised cityscape. The English title THE CRAZY BOYS AT THE SUPERMARKET appears at left, while the massive Japanese title スーパーマーケット珍作戦 dominates the lower half in bold red typography—pure 1970s pop-comedy impact, and a fantastic display piece once framed.
It is over 52 years old!
