This is an original Japanese poster printed in 1960 for the first release of The Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll (ジキル博士の二つの顔), Hammer Films’ lurid reinterpretation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s gothic classic. Directed by Terence Fisher and starring Paul Massie in the dual role with Dawn Addams and Christopher Lee, this was one of Hammer’s boldest early-1960s productions, pushing the studio’s gothic cycle into darker, more adult territory.

Printed for the film’s initial theatrical run in Japan, this scarce original B2 (半裁) poster is highly prized and commands a premium—an extraordinary piece of Hammer horror paper now more than 65 years old.

Why this example is extraordinary (rarity & market)

Japanese Hammer posters from the early 1960s survive in extremely limited numbers compared to domestic Japanese productions, with low print runs for imported films. We have never previously handled this title, making this a genuine first-in-store rarity.

Adding to its provenance, this particular sheet features period pencil notations on the verso (back), almost certainly written by a cinema owner or manager. The calculations record ticket sales, a loan of ¥500,000, and the associated interest payments—an evocative glimpse into the economics of Japanese cinema exhibition at the time. Though lightly written and erasable, we believe these markings enhance the authenticity and historical value of the piece.

Poster design

A sensational Hammer horror composition: Paul Massie’s wide-eyed Jekyll dominates the foreground, syringe in hand, while his brutish Hyde persona lurks behind him in shadowy menace. Around him swirl scenes of violence and temptation: Christopher Lee in a tense confrontation, a cabaret performance, and a snake-charmer in exotic mask and costume. The vivid palette of crimson, emerald, and ochre is pure early-60s Hammer excess, while the bold blue Japanese title 「ジキル博士の二つの顔」 cascades vertically down the left margin, anchoring the composition with dynamic impact.

Condition

Excellent. Colours are extremely bright and unfaded, with striking vibrancy across the sheet. Paper is very clean, only the noted pencil calculations on the verso. Please review the provided photos (front and back) as they show the exact poster offered.
