"The French Connection", Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1971, B2 Size (51 x 73cm) D70A
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster produced for the original Japanese release of The French Connection, the landmark 1971 American crime thriller directed by William Friedkin and starring Gene Hackman, Roy Scheider, and Fernando Rey.
One of the defining police thrillers of the 1970s, The French Connection follows New York narcotics detectives Jimmy “Popeye” Doyle and Buddy Russo as they pursue an international heroin-smuggling operation linking Marseille and New York. Gritty, fast, and unsentimental, the film became famous for its raw documentary-like realism and its legendary elevated-train car chase sequence.
The poster features a superb Japanese theatrical design, combining dynamic action imagery with bold graphic typography. A dramatic bridge perspective dominates the upper composition, while Popeye Doyle aims directly toward the viewer in the foreground. The large red diagonal English title THE FRENCH CONNECTION cuts powerfully across the lower half, with the Japanese title フレンチ・コネクション printed beneath.
The design captures the film’s atmosphere of pursuit, pressure, and urban danger, with an energetic layout that differs strongly from standard American poster treatments. The result is a highly collectible Japanese interpretation of one of the greatest crime films of the era.
