“The Godfather” (ゴッドファーザー), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1972, Rare Technicolor Version, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) F151
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1972 for the first Japanese release of The Godfather (ゴッドファーザー), Francis Ford Coppola’s landmark American crime drama based on the bestselling novel by Mario Puzo.
This is the much rarer Technicolor version of the original Japanese release poster, distinguished by the テクニカラー notation printed near the upper right. Original Japanese posters for The Godfather are highly collectible, and this elegant black-background design remains one of the strongest international posters for the film.
Film background
Released in 1972, The Godfather is widely regarded as one of the greatest films ever made. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, who co-wrote the screenplay with Mario Puzo, the film stars Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Richard Castellano, Robert Duvall, Sterling Hayden, John Marley, Richard Conte, and Diane Keaton.
Set between 1945 and 1955, the film chronicles the Corleone crime family under patriarch Vito Corleone, while tracing the transformation of his youngest son, Michael Corleone, from reluctant outsider to ruthless mafia leader. Its combination of family drama, violence, ritual, and moral decline made it a defining work of 1970s American cinema.
Poster design
This Japanese B2 uses the film’s now-iconic minimalist visual language with exceptional restraint. The composition is dominated by a deep black field, giving the poster an austere and commanding presence. At lower centre, the title The Godfather appears in large cream lettering, accompanied by the famous puppet-hand motif, one of the most recognisable symbols in modern film advertising.
Above the title, a vertical strip of black-and-white stills cuts down through the design, evoking both a film reel and the structure of family memory. At upper left, the stark partial silhouette of Marlon Brando as Don Vito Corleone emerges from the black ground, reinforcing the film’s atmosphere of secrecy, power, and intimidation.
The Japanese title ゴッドファーザー appears boldly beneath the English title, while the lower section carries Japanese cast and production credits, including Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, and Francis Ford Coppola. The Paramount / CIC distribution marks appear at the lower right.
The result is an unusually refined Japanese release poster: graphic, solemn, and perfectly suited to the film’s themes of control, family, loyalty, and power.
