This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed for the 1974 Japanese re-release of Charlie Chaplin’s The Gold Rush (チャップリンの黄金狂時代 / Ōgon Kyō Jidai). Written, produced, directed by, and starring Charles Chaplin, the film remains one of the defining achievements of silent-era comedy and one of the most enduring works in the history of world cinema.

Released in Japan by Towa, this colourful re-release design promotes the film as part of the celebrated “Viva Chaplin!” revival campaign and presents several of its most recognisable comic sequences.

Film background

Originally released in 1925, The Gold Rush follows Chaplin’s Little Tramp—here presented as a solitary prospector—who travels to the Klondike during the gold rush in search of fortune.

Caught in a violent snowstorm, he takes refuge in a remote cabin with fellow prospector Big Jim McKay and the wanted criminal Black Larsen. Their struggle against hunger, isolation, and the severe winter produces several of Chaplin’s most celebrated comic episodes, including the boiled boot meal, the dance of the bread rolls, the teetering cabin, and the Tramp’s romantic longing for dance-hall performer Georgia.

Beneath its comedy, the film explores poverty, loneliness, dignity, romantic hope, and the precarious pursuit of prosperity. Chaplin later revisited the film in 1942, adding his own musical score, sound effects, and spoken narration.

Poster design

This Japanese B2 is dominated by a large image of Chaplin’s Little Tramp standing amid the frozen Klondike landscape, wrapped in an oversized coat and holding his familiar cane. Snow clings to his bowler hat and clothing, immediately recalling the film’s harsh but absurdly comic wilderness setting.

The restrained grey, white, and icy blue background contrasts strongly with the enormous red Japanese title:

The bold typography occupies almost the entire lower half of the sheet and gives the poster exceptional visibility and period display character.

Along the right side, five circular vignettes recall key sequences from the film, including Chaplin’s romance, the cabin balanced perilously above a precipice, the celebrated bread-roll dance, and further moments of physical comedy. The arrangement functions as a compact visual summary of the film’s mixture of romance, hardship, danger, and elaborate comic invention.

The turquoise campaign line above the title reads:

Approximately:

The central billing emphasises Chaplin’s complete creative control:

Cultural significance

The Gold Rush is among Chaplin’s most celebrated films and one of the foundational works of screen comedy. Its set pieces remain instantly recognisable, while its blend of laughter and pathos established a model for later filmmakers combining physical comedy with emotional storytelling.

Chaplin himself regarded it as one of the films by which he most wished to be remembered. The Little Tramp’s ability to maintain dignity and imagination amid deprivation remains central to the film’s lasting appeal.
