“The Graduate” (卒業), Original Re-Release Japanese Movie Poster 1971, B2 Size (51 x 73cm) ZA429

Sale price $150.00

This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1972 for the theatrical re‑release of Mike Nichols’ iconic coming‑of‑age film The Graduate (卒業).

Film background

First released in 1967, The Graduate follows recent college graduate Benjamin Braddock (Dustin Hoffman) as he drifts aimlessly through suburban California, only to begin an affair with the older Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft) while gradually falling for her daughter Elaine (Katharine Ross). With its daring sexual themes, sharp satirical edge and the now‑legendary Simon & Garfunkel soundtrack, the film became a cultural touchstone of the late 1960s and earned Nichols the Academy Award for Best Director.

Poster design

The Japanese re‑release artwork spotlights the film’s famous final act. Benjamin and Elaine, still in her extravagant pink wedding dress, run straight toward the viewer with the Bay Bridge stretching out behind them — a visualisation of their impulsive escape and uncertain future. The sky‑blue background and large calligraphic title “卒業” create a sense of openness and youthful possibility, while smaller inset stills at the bottom hint at the film’s more intimate, awkward encounters. The overall composition balances romance, comedy and rebellion in a way that perfectly reflects the tone of the movie.

Rarity and condition

Re‑release B2 posters for The Graduate are considerably scarcer than the original campaign and are a great way to represent the film at a slightly more accessible price point. Their 1970s printing also gives them a distinctive period colour palette that appeals to collectors of vintage American cinema art.

This example is in excellent condition, with bright, unfaded colours and only light handling traces around the borders and fold lines. Please refer to the photographs of the actual poster for full details.

It is around 54 years old.

It is not a reproduction or a reprint.

Certificate of Authenticity included.
