“The Hateful Eight” / 「ヘイトフル・エイト」, Original Japanese Movie Poster 2016, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) E298
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed for the Japanese release of The Hateful Eight / 「ヘイトフル・エイト」, Quentin Tarantino’s acclaimed 2015 revisionist Western mystery thriller.
A tense, dialogue-driven chamber piece set against the violence and suspicion of the post-Civil War American frontier, The Hateful Eight combines Western iconography, murder mystery structure, black comedy, and explosive Tarantino-style confrontation. This Japanese poster is especially striking, with a snow-filled ensemble composition and bold promotional typography emphasizing the film’s “closed-room” mystery premise.
Film background
Released internationally in 2015, The Hateful Eight follows eight dangerous strangers who take refuge from a Wyoming blizzard inside Minnie’s Haberdashery, a remote stagecoach stopover. As the storm closes in, suspicion spreads through the room, and it becomes clear that several of the guests are concealing their true identities.
The film was written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, and is presented as his eighth feature film. The ensemble cast includes Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Walton Goggins, Demián Bichir, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, and Bruce Dern.
The film received strong critical attention for its performances, atmosphere, dialogue, and large-format cinematography. It earned three Academy Award nominations, winning Best Original Score for Ennio Morricone, whose music became one of the defining elements of the film’s icy, suspenseful tone.
Poster design
The Japanese poster uses a dramatic snow-swept ensemble composition, with the principal cast arranged in heavy winter clothing before a remote cabin and stagecoach setting. Falling snow fills the image, immediately establishing the film’s atmosphere of isolation, danger, and mistrust.
The central group portrait has a confrontational quality, with each figure facing forward against the bleak winter landscape. The composition strongly communicates the film’s central premise: a group of morally ambiguous strangers trapped together in a hostile environment.
The large Japanese headline at the top reads:
「本年度アカデミー賞大本命!」
“This year’s major Academy Award contender!”
The main promotional line beneath it declares:
「タランティーノが仕掛ける『密室』ミステリー」
“A ‘closed-room’ mystery orchestrated by Tarantino.”
Above the title, the poster notes:
「クエンティン・タランティーノ監督第8作」
“Quentin Tarantino’s eighth directed feature.”
The bottom tagline reads:
「クセものの8人、全員ウソつき。生き残るのは誰だ!」
“Eight suspicious characters, all of them liars. Who will survive?”
The lower section features the Japanese title 「ヘイトフル・エイト」 above the bold English title THE HATEFUL 8, with the number 8 rendered as a large red graphic element. The release date “2.27 SAT” appears at lower left, with the official billing and Japanese distributor information printed across the base.
The overall design is bold, atmospheric, and highly effective, capturing both the Western setting and the claustrophobic mystery structure of the film.
