“The Hot Spot” / ホット・スポット (1990) – ORIGINAL JAPANESE B2 THEATRICAL POSTER – DENNIS HOPPER – B2 SIZE (51 × 73 cm) C270

Sale price $195.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed in 1991 for the Japanese release of Dennis Hopper’s stylish neo-noir crime thriller The Hot Spot, released in Japan under the title ホット・スポット.

Starring Don Johnson, Virginia Madsen, and Jennifer Connelly, The Hot Spot is one of the more visually distinctive American neo-noirs of its period: a sun-drenched, erotically charged thriller steeped in the language of classic pulp crime, but filtered through a cool late-20th-century sensibility. Japanese posters for the film are especially appealing for their refined graphic approach, and this B2 is a particularly elegant example.

Film background
Directed by Dennis Hopper and based on the novel by Charles Williams, The Hot Spot follows drifter Harry Madox as he arrives in a small Texas town and becomes entangled in robbery, deception, and a dangerous triangle of desire. The film is now well regarded for its moody neo-noir atmosphere, its sensual tension, and its superb visual style, while the cast — especially Don Johnson at the height of his screen fame, Virginia Madsen, and Jennifer Connelly — gives it lasting collector appeal.

Poster design
This Japanese B2 uses a highly sophisticated triptych-style layout, separating the design into three clean horizontal image bands against a crisp white structure.

At the top, a vivid blue sky with drifting clouds is interrupted by the cropped face of Don Johnson in dark sunglasses, immediately establishing the film’s hot, detached, and dangerous mood. The central panel presents a desert highway stretching to the horizon, with a long pink Cadillac convertible parked across the road; at left appears a sharply cropped female profile in sunglasses and a headscarf, reinforcing the noir glamour. The bottom section is dominated by a bold, sensual close-up of bright red lips holding a cigarette, an image that captures the film’s erotic charge with striking economy.

Across the white dividers are the Japanese critical quote at top, the director credit 「デニス・ホッパー作品」, and the bold title ホット・スポット in heavy black type. The overall effect is graphic, modern, and unusually restrained — a superb Japanese reinterpretation of American neo-noir imagery.

Collector significance
This poster has strong crossover appeal for collectors of neo-noir, Dennis Hopper, Don Johnson, Jennifer Connelly, and 1990s Japanese theatrical design. Compared with more conventional international key art for the film, the Japanese B2 stands out for its clean design, bold image selection, and polished minimalist presentation.

For collectors of American cult and noir-inflected cinema, it is a particularly attractive and displayable format.
