“The Hunter” (ハンター), Original Japanese Movie Poster 1980, First Release, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O87
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1980 for the first domestic theatrical release of The Hunter (ハンター), produced by Paramount Pictures and distributed in Japan by CIC (Cinema International Corporation). First-issue Japanese posters for Steve McQueen’s final film are increasingly sought after by collectors of Hollywood action and star memorabilia.
Film background
Directed by Buzz Kulik and adapted from Christopher Keane’s book about real-life bounty hunter Ralph “Papa” Thorson, The Hunter (1980) was Steve McQueen’s last screen performance, released only months before his death. Mixing procedural manhunts with character study, the film features memorable set-pieces including a chase on Chicago’s elevated tracks and a harvester pursuit in rural cornfields. Cast includes Kathryn Harrold, Eli Wallach and Ben Johnson.
Poster design
A bold, sky-blue field is dominated by the colossal red katakana title 「ハンター」, with English billing above. The central composition shows the titular hunter crouched on an elevated structure, pistol in hand, against a wide cityscape—an image that encapsulates the film’s urban-thriller energy. Along the foot, the emphatic white tagline 「獲物は人間!!」 (“The prey is human!!”) runs above credits and the CIC mark. Striking colour separation and large typography give this sheet strong wall presence.
