“The Legend of Hell House” (地獄邸の伝説), Original Japanese Movie Poster c. 1974, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) — T205

Sale price $100.00

This is an original Japanese B2 poster for The Legend of Hell House, John Hough’s atmospheric supernatural horror film, featuring Pamela Franklin, Roddy McDowall, Clive Revill and Gayle Hunnicutt. Produced in 1973 and released theatrically in Japan in 1974, the film combines Gothic menace with an unsettling investigation into the paranormal. This sheet carries the Japanese title 地獄邸の伝説, rather than the more familiar ヘルハウス.

Film background
Adapted by Richard Matheson from his own novel Hell House, the story follows a physicist, his wife and two mediums as they investigate the notorious Belasco House. Their attempts to establish whether life survives death bring them into conflict with a sinister presence—and with one another.

The tension between scientific explanation and supernatural belief drives the film’s increasingly disturbing events. Its confined setting, ominous soundscape and strong performances make it a memorable example of 1970s haunted-house cinema.

Poster design
A wonderfully eerie photographic montage places Pamela Franklin’s alarmed profile beneath the looming silhouette of a mist-shrouded mansion. Pale green-grey skies and a sharp burst of light above the roof create an atmosphere of supernatural unease.

Smaller character portraits and scenes surround the central image, while a shadowed doorway near the bottom adds another ominous detail. The enormous blue Japanese title dominates the lower section, balanced by green English lettering and vertical pink promotional copy. The result is a distinctly Japanese presentation of this British horror classic.

Condition
Very Good+. There are handling creases, edge wear and tears, including a visible tear extending inward from the right edge across part of the blue title. The reverse shows age toning, marks and horizontal discolouration.
