This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1964 for the first Japanese release of The Magnificent Cuckold (original Italian title: Il magnifico cornuto), Antonio Pietrangeli’s sharply observed Italian comedy-drama starring Ugo Tognazzi and Claudia Cardinale. Beautifully centred around an elegant, oversized portrait of Cardinale in vivid scarlet, this is a highly displayable Japanese design for one of the most stylish European relationship films of the 1960s.

The film stars Ugo Tognazzi as a successful businessman consumed by obsessive jealousy, despite having no clear proof of his wife’s infidelity, and Claudia Cardinale as the glamorous, enigmatic wife at the centre of his spiralling suspicions. Poster design
A superb Japanese poster design built around pure star power and elegant visual contrast. Claudia Cardinale dominates the composition in a sweeping red dress rendered against a pale ground, immediately giving the piece a bold, minimalist impact from a distance. Around her are scattered smaller figures of Ugo Tognazzi in different poses, visually reinforcing the husband’s comic torment and psychological disarray. The cool blue Japanese title slashed across the lower section works brilliantly against the red field of the dress, while the overall layout feels unmistakably continental: chic, witty, and slightly cruel. It is an exceptionally attractive European-art-house image, and one of those posters that works just as well as wall art as it does as film memorabilia.
