“The Magnificent Seven” / 「荒野の七人」, Original Japanese Re-Release Movie Poster 2004, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) T132

Sale price $175.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster from the 2004 Japanese re-release of The Magnificent Seven / 「荒野の七人」, John Sturges’s classic Western starring Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, and Eli Wallach.

Originally released in 1960, the film returned to Japanese cinemas in new prints through Cinequanon, with the revival opening on 25 December 2004.

This striking red-and-gold design builds its photographic montage around an enormous numeral “7”, combining commanding star portraits with the memorable image of the seven gunfighters riding together.

Film background

A Western adaptation of Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai (1954), The Magnificent Seven relocates the story of hired defenders to a Mexican farming village repeatedly plundered by the bandit Calvera, played by Eli Wallach.

Unable to withstand another raid, the villagers seek help across the border. They encounter Chris, a professional gunfighter played by Yul Brynner, who assembles a small group willing to undertake the dangerous assignment for very little money.

His recruits include Vin, played by Steve McQueen, alongside gunmen whose contrasting personalities, skills, and motives give the film its distinctive ensemble character.

The seven train the villagers to defend themselves and prepare for Calvera’s return. Their commitment gradually becomes a question of loyalty, courage, and personal honour, extending beyond the modest payment originally offered.

The principal cast includes:

Yul Brynner
Steve McQueen
Eli Wallach
Charles Bronson
Robert Vaughn
Brad Dexter
James Coburn
Horst Buchholz

The film was produced and directed by John Sturges, with the credited screenplay by William Roberts and cinematography by Charles Lang Jr.

Elmer Bernstein’s stirring, Academy Award-nominated score supplies one of the film’s defining elements, giving its horseback journeys and action sequences their unmistakable momentum.

Poster design

The composition uses a gigantic red numeral “7” as both its central graphic device and a framework for photographs from the film.

Its broad upper section and descending diagonal contain a dense montage of gunfighters, bandits, and action scenes. The surrounding golden-yellow areas give the image a strong contrast and make the numeral immediately recognisable.

An imposing portrait of Yul Brynner, wearing his character’s black cowboy hat, dominates the upper right. Below him, a large photograph of Steve McQueen follows the diagonal of the numeral, drawing the eye towards the lower half.

Smaller photographs introduce the wider conflict, including Eli Wallach as Calvera, armed riders, and riflemen preparing for action.

Across the upper left, the English title appears in substantial gold lettering:

“THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN”

Above it, the white promotional line reads:

“THEY WERE 7, AND THEY FOUGHT LIKE SEVEN HUNDRED!!”

A pale-gold panel preserves the English billing, including The Mirisch Company, the principal cast, John Sturges, William Roberts, and Elmer Bernstein. The original presentation credits also identify Panavision, Color by De Luxe, and United Artists.

The lower section opens into a panoramic photograph of the seven gunfighters advancing on horseback across a dusty landscape. This gives the tightly arranged portraits above a sense of space and movement.

Immediately above the Japanese title, the headline reads:

「史上最強のウエスタン!史上最大の決闘劇!」

Translated:

“The mightiest Western ever! The greatest showdown ever!”

The large white title:

「荒野の七人」

anchors the bottom of the composition, standing sharply against the warm desert colours.

The result is a bold, highly attractive Japanese revival design with strong appeal for collectors of classic Westerns and its celebrated ensemble cast.
