"The Mighty Peking Man", Original First Release Japanese Movie Poster 1977, B2 Size (51 x 73cm) N188
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1977 for the first theatrical release of The Mighty Peking Man (北京原人の逆襲), a cult kaiju–adventure film produced by Hong Kong’s Shaw Brothers Studio. Japanese posters for Shaw Brothers monster and exploitation films are rare and highly collectible, especially for titles that gained international cult status in the 1970s.
Film background
Released in 1977 during the global wave of giant-monster and disaster cinema, The Mighty Peking Man was directed by Ho Meng-hua and produced by Runme Shaw. Created as Hong Kong’s answer to King Kong (and released shortly after Dino De Laurentiis’s 1976 remake), the film follows an expedition to the Himalayas that discovers a colossal ape-like creature. The monster is brought to civilization, leading to inevitable chaos and destruction. Starring Danny Lee and Swiss actress Evelyne Kraft, the film blends kaiju spectacle with exotic adventure, complete with jungle settings, romance, and large-scale city rampages. Long considered a cult favorite, the film was rediscovered by international audiences in the 1990s thanks to Quentin Tarantino’s Rolling Thunder Pictures, which re-released it in the U.S.
Poster design
The Japanese first release poster is a dramatic painted design showing the towering giant ape wreaking havoc — clutching a sinking ship in one hand while surrounded by flames, collapsing buildings, and military attack. At the bottom right, Evelyne Kraft, dressed in tattered jungle attire, runs amidst the destruction, embodying the film’s pulpy mix of beauty and the beast. The bold red Japanese title 「北京原人の逆襲」 dominates the base of the composition, while hand-painted textures heighten the chaotic, over-the-top energy typical of 1970s exploitation cinema.
