“The Miracle Worker” (奇跡の人), Original Japanese Movie Poster 1980, Patty Duke Astin / Melissa Gilbert, B2 Size (c. 51 × 73 cm) — T71
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster for the 1980 first Japanese release of The Miracle Worker, released in Japan as 奇跡の人 (Kiseki no Hito). Originally produced for American television in 1979, this adaptation received a Japanese theatrical release through Nippon Herald Films.
Directed by Paul Aaron, with a teleplay by William Gibson based on his own stage play, the film stars Patty Duke Astin and Melissa Gilbert, supported by Diana Muldaur and Charles Siebert. It follows the relationship between Helen Keller, who is deafblind, and her teacher Anne Sullivan, whose determination helps Helen understand the connection between language and the world around her.
The casting gives this adaptation a particularly meaningful connection to the earlier film: Patty Duke, who won an Academy Award for playing Helen in the 1962 version, returns here as Anne Sullivan, opposite Melissa Gilbert as Helen. Their performances place the developing bond between teacher and pupil at the centre of the drama.
The upper-left section features a tender colour photograph of Sullivan and Helen embracing beside the water pump, their hands clasped together. The photograph gives the design an immediate emotional focus, while the surrounding pale background leaves generous space for the credits and typography.
A small water-pump silhouette, enclosed within a narrow rectangular border, appears beside the English production credits. This simple emblem recalls the story’s pivotal moment of understanding, connecting the graphic design directly to the scene pictured alongside it.
The enormous English title, “THE MIRACLE WORKER,” dominates the centre and lower section. Its letters contain contrasting shades of green divided by diagonal shapes, creating subtle movement within the otherwise orderly layout. The black Japanese title 「奇跡の人」 sits below, with further Japanese credits along the bottom margin.
The white tagline on the turquoise band reads:
「あなたの心にふれてみせるわ。」
“I will reach your heart.”
Additional promotional copy recalls the unforgettable word “Water” and presents the film as a new screen interpretation of the familiar story.
The combination of intimate photography, symbolic imagery and expansive lettering makes this an appealing example for collectors of Patty Duke, Melissa Gilbert, literary adaptations and Japanese film poster typography.
Condition: Excellent.
Horizontal and vertical fold lines and light handling creases are visible, together with minor edge wear and light age toning. The photograph and green title retain strong colour, and the poster presents well.
