“The Myth of the American Sleepover” / 「アメリカン・スリープオーバー」, Original Japanese Movie Poster 2016, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) I342

Sale price $135.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed for the 2016 Japanese release of The Myth of the American Sleepover / 「アメリカン・スリープオーバー」, David Robert Mitchell’s acclaimed 2010 coming-of-age drama.

Although the film was produced in 2010, it did not receive its Japanese theatrical release until 27 August 2016, following the international success of Mitchell’s second feature, It Follows.

Film background

Set during the final days of summer in suburban Detroit, the film follows several teenagers and young adults moving between sleepovers, pool parties, house gatherings, and quiet nocturnal encounters.

Their stories overlap as they pursue fleeting attractions, unrequited crushes, and imagined possibilities before the beginning of a new school year.

Rather than relying on a single central plot, the film observes adolescence through a series of intimate episodes: a boy searching for a girl he briefly encountered, a young woman questioning her relationship, and a college student drawn towards two twin sisters.

The result is a gentle portrait of youthful longing, uncertainty, and the awkward distance between romantic expectation and lived experience.

The film was written and directed by David Robert Mitchell, marking his feature directorial debut.

The principal cast includes:

Claire Sloma
Marlon Morton
Amanda Bauer
Brett Jacobsen
Jade Ramsey
Nikita Ramsey
Amy Seimetz

The cinematography was by James Laxton, with music composed by Kyle Newmaster and production by Adele Romanski, who later produced Moonlight. The film was selected for Cannes Critics’ Week and received a Special Jury Award at the 2010 SXSW Film Festival.

Poster design

This elegant Japanese poster uses a soft, nostalgic poolside image overlaid with broad washes of pink, lavender, coral, and pale orange.

Two young women sit with their backs towards the viewer at the edge of a public swimming pool. Their relaxed poses, wet hair, and partially emptied surroundings suggest the end of a long summer afternoon.

The photograph is deliberately understated, avoiding conventional cast portraits or narrative action. Its sun-faded tones give the image the character of a half-remembered adolescent experience.

Across the centre appears the English title:

“THE MYTH
OF THE AMERICAN
SLEEPOVER”

The words are placed within the translucent watercolour field, visually combining the film’s realism with a more romantic and subjective sense of memory.

The large handwritten Japanese title reads:

「アメリカン・スリープオーバー」

Its informal black lettering resembles writing in a notebook or personal diary.

The white tagline near the bottom reads:

「美しい10代の神話。」

Translated:

“A beautiful myth of adolescence.”

The upper-right credit promotes the filmmaker as:

「『イット・フォローズ』
デヴィッド・ロバート・ミッチェル監督作品」

Translated:

“A film by David Robert Mitchell, director of It Follows.”

Three festival laurels across the top record the film’s recognition at:

South by Southwest
Cannes Critics’ Week
Sarasota Film Festival

The lower credits identify the cast and filmmakers, together with the Japanese distribution and promotional credit for Gucchi’s Free School.

The result is a refined piece of contemporary Japanese independent-film design, capturing the film’s atmosphere of summer melancholy, romantic uncertainty, and memories already beginning to fade.
