Sale price $850.00

This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1960 for the first Japanese theatrical release of The Night Heaven Fell, Roger Vadim’s 1958 romantic drama starring Brigitte Bardot, alongside Stephen Boyd and Alida Valli. An exceptionally scarce Japanese first-release poster for a Bardot title that is virtually impossible to find today, it pairs bold late-1950s / early-1960s graphic design with one of European cinema’s most magnetic screen icons.

Film background
Originally released in 1958, The Night Heaven Fell (French title: Les bijoutiers du clair de lune) is one of the key Brigitte Bardot vehicles of her late-1950s period, directed by Roger Vadim, the filmmaker most closely associated with her early international image. Sensual, volatile, and melodramatic, the film belongs to that rich post-war European tradition in which desire, danger, and glamour are inseparable. Bardot’s presence is, of course, central: by this point she had become one of the most recognisable and controversial stars in world cinema, and films such as this helped define her image as a symbol of liberated, destructive, and irresistible femininity.

Poster design
A stunning and highly displayable Japanese design built around an intimate, confrontational close-up of the two leads, with Bardot turned in profile in black lace and pale floral hair adornments, while Stephen Boyd faces her in a tense, near-embrace. The enormous vertical red Japanese title down the left side gives the sheet tremendous visual force, while the reclining white line-drawn female figure at the bottom adds a stylish, almost poster-art flourish that feels distinctly of its era. The upper-right Cinemascope call-out and the rich colour printing complete the effect. This is exactly the kind of sophisticated, erotic European poster design that makes vintage Japanese first-release sheets so compelling.
