“The Night Porter” (愛の嵐), Original Japanese Movie Poster 1974, Japanese First Release, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) J250

Sale price $200.00

This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1974 for the first domestic theatrical release of The Night Porter (愛の嵐), directed by Liliana Cavani and released in Japan by Herald. First-issue Japanese posters for Cavani’s controversial psychological drama—starring Dirk Bogarde and Charlotte Rampling—are highly collectible.

Film background
Set in 1957 Vienna, the film reunites former concentration-camp guard Max (Bogarde), now a hotel porter, with Lucia (Rampling), his onetime prisoner and obsession. Their rekindled, coercive relationship draws them into a closed world of guilt, desire, and complicity, as Max’s ex-Nazi circle closes in. The film provoked intense debate for its portrayal of trauma, power, and erotic fixation, becoming a touchstone of 1970s art-house cinema.

Poster design
An indelible country sheet: Rampling stands bare-chested in officer’s cap and suspenders—an image from the infamous cabaret sequence—set against a grainy brown field that amplifies the film’s provocative tone. Vertical white copy runs down the left margin; at the base, the brush-style pink Japanese logotype 「愛の嵐」 spans the width above English titling and credits. Distributor Herald and the Eirin rating mark appear along the footer—classic hallmarks of a first-release sheet with striking wall presence.
