“Get Shorty” (ゲット・ショーティ), Original Japanese First-Release Movie Poster 1996, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) — T173

Sale price $110.00

This is an original Japanese B2 poster produced for the 1996 Japanese theatrical release of Get Shorty, Barry Sonnenfeld’s stylish crime comedy starring John Travolta, Gene Hackman, Rene Russo and Danny DeVito. Adapted from Elmore Leonard’s novel, the film brings the criminal underworld into Hollywood, where intimidation, ambition and storytelling prove surprisingly interchangeable.

Film background
Originally released in the United States in 1995, Get Shorty follows Chili Palmer, a Miami loan shark and devoted film enthusiast whose debt-collection assignment leads him to Los Angeles. After meeting a struggling producer, Chili begins pursuing a movie project of his own, discovering that his existing skills translate remarkably well to the film business.

Travolta’s relaxed, knowing performance anchors the film’s mixture of sharp dialogue, eccentric characters and affectionate Hollywood satire. The Japanese campaign prominently highlights his Golden Globe win for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy.

Poster design
A playful billboard composition captures the film’s fascination with Hollywood image-making. Travolta stands in the foreground dressed in black, lowering his sunglasses to look directly at the viewer. Behind him, an enormous roadside billboard presents DeVito, Russo and Hackman, all wearing sunglasses, alongside the tall white English title.

Pale blue skies and palm-tree silhouettes establish the Los Angeles setting, while the bold red Japanese title adds a strong burst of colour below. Japanese review excerpts and the prominent awards announcement complete a confident, witty design that suits the film’s tone.
