This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster for the first Japanese release of Blake Edwards’ The Pink Panther, which opened in Japan on 29 February 1964 through United Artists. The film introduced Peter Sellers as Inspector Jacques Clouseau, on the trail of a gentleman thief known as the Phantom, played by David Niven. His target is the celebrated pink diamond belonging to Claudia Cardinale’s Princess Dala.

The Japanese design gives Cardinale pride of place. Wearing a white knitted ski hat and a rose-pink roll-neck sweater, she smiles against a clear blue sky. To her left, two skiers stand beneath the snow-covered peaks of Cortina d’Ampezzo. The vertical Japanese copy draws attention to the Alpine setting, while the small lettering at the upper left bills the film in “Full Colour / Technirama.”

The deep pink Japanese title, ピンクの豹, stretches across the lower half of the sheet. Beneath it, circular portraits show Sellers with Capucine, Robert Wagner in a small green inset, and Niven peering around a door. A second, full-length image of Cardinale in a pink coat and black boots completes the ensemble. At the upper right, the cartoon Panther peers over a pink disc bearing the English title.

Condition: Very Good / Excellent for its age. There is paper loss at the top right-hand corner, extending into part of the cartoon Panther’s head, as shown in the close-up photograph. The English title disc, Cardinale’s main portrait and the large Japanese title are unaffected. There is also a small pinhole near the upper left and some light handling wear. We have taken the condition into account when pricing. Once framed, this poster will display excellently.
