“Honeymoon” (蜜月 / Mitsugetsu), Original Japanese Movie Poster 1984, ATG, Design by Noriyoshi Ikeya, B2 Size (51.5 × 72.8 cm) — ZA367

Sale price $120.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster for the 1984 release of Honeymoon, directed by Masato Hashiura, presented through the collaboration between Cinema Haut and the Art Theatre Guild (ATG).

Featuring design by Noriyoshi Ikeya and photography by Seitaro Shimizu, this is an exceptionally atmospheric composition, bringing together silhouetted figures, glowing city lights and a richly coloured evening sky.

Based on Wahei Tatematsu’s novel, with a screenplay by the author himself, the film stars Koichi Sato and Kumi Nakamura. It follows the relationship between an aspiring writer and a woman working for a literary magazine, exploring the fragile balance between romantic attachment, personal ambition and the pressures of everyday life. The supporting cast includes Toru Masuoka, Hirotaro Honda, Momoko Kochi and Ichiro Zaitsu, with music by Yosuke Yamashita.

The poster captures this mixture of intimacy and uncertainty through a beautifully restrained photographic image. A nude couple stand against a softly blurred city skyline, their bodies largely concealed in shadow. The man faces away from the viewer, while the woman turns towards him in profile. Their physical closeness contrasts with the distance and anonymity of the illuminated buildings beyond.

Across the upper half, a rose-pink and coral sky fades into violet and deep shadow. Scattered points of light soften the urban setting, lending the image the polished, melancholic atmosphere associated with Japanese graphic design and record sleeves of the 1980s.

The large Japanese title, 蜜月, appears in a striking turquoise-to-lime gradient, with the reading みつげつ placed between the two characters. The familiar ATG logo sits directly below, while pale vertical lettering identifies Hashiura as the director.

Running down the left side is the unsettling tagline:

「あなたって、こわいところがあるのよ」
“There’s something frightening about you.”

This quiet warning gives the romantic image an underlying tension. The combination of colour, silhouette and spare typography makes the poster particularly appealing for collectors of ATG cinema, Japanese photographic design and 1980s film posters.
