This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster for The Blockade (Блокада), released in Japan in 1975 as レニングラード攻防戦. Directed by Mikhail Ershov and produced by Lenfilm, the Soviet war epic is presented here through an imposing montage of wartime leaders, civilians, and battlefield action.

Film background

The Blockade dramatises the German advance towards Leningrad and the Soviet defence of the city during the Second World War. Combining military strategy with the experiences of soldiers and civilians, the production portrays a city facing bombardment, isolation, and immense human suffering.

Ershov’s film belongs to the Soviet tradition of large-scale historical war epics. Its narrative moves between political leadership, military command, and individual lives, placing battlefield spectacle alongside the struggle to preserve everyday life.

Poster design

Large photographic portraits of Hitler and Stalin as portrayed in the film dominate the centre. Their overlapping faces emerge from a smoky orange-and-brown background, while smaller portraits across the upper edge reinforce the emphasis on wartime leadership.

Scenes of civilians, damaged buildings, and military vehicles occupy the upper section. Below, a sweeping battlefield panorama brings together tanks, infantry, aircraft, and explosions, creating depth and movement across the width of the sheet.

The enormous red Japanese title レニングラード攻防戦 anchors the lower edge, balanced by the original Cyrillic title БЛОКАДА near the top. Vertical advertising copy promotes the production as having taken four years and ¥6 billion, reflecting the scale emphasised by its Japanese theatrical campaign. The Toho foreign-film distribution credit appears at the lower left.
