An original Japanese B2 theatrical poster for the 1988 re-release of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the celebrated 1975 cult musical directed by Jim Sharman, adapted from Richard O’Brien’s stage show, and starring Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, and Barry Bostwick.

The film’s extraordinary afterlife through midnight screenings and audience participation became an essential part of its identity. In Japan, participatory late-night screenings took place at Cinema Rise in Shibuya in 1988, placing this revival campaign within an important chapter of the film’s Japanese following.

This striking design brings together Rocky Horror’s most recognisable imagery. Enormous glossy red lips dominate the centre, beneath the English title in dripping red lettering with pale outlines. The Japanese title sits directly below the English logo, framed by simple rectangular brackets.

Around the lips, red-bordered stars contain portraits of Tim Curry as Frank-N-Furter, alongside Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick, Richard O’Brien, and other members of the ensemble. Their theatrical expressions and colourful makeup stand out against the deep black background.

A radio-tower motif rises through the lower composition, surrounded by lightning bolts and clouds tinged with pink. Japanese cast and production credits flank the structure, while a full-length image of Frank-N-Furter appears near its base.

The playful English slogan beside Curry’s central portrait captures the film’s irreverent tone:

“He’s the hero—that’s right, the hero!!”

The printed distribution credits name Eurospace and Cinema Rise Shibuya, adding a distinctive local connection to this Japanese revival poster. Its combination of vivid red, dark backgrounds, and star-shaped photographic portraits makes it an especially effective display piece for collectors of cult cinema and musical memorabilia.
