“The Rocky Horror Picture Show” (ロッキー・ホラー・ショー), Japanese Movie Poster 1988 — Theater By Night Campaign, B1 Size (71 × 103 cm)

Sale price $350.00

This is an original Japanese B1 poster printed in 1988 for special late-night screenings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show under the nationwide “日本たばこ Theater By Night” program—Jim Sharman’s cult musical adapted from Richard O’Brien’s stage hit and starring Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick, Meat Loaf, and O’Brien.

Film background

A delirious cocktail of sci-fi pastiche, glam rock, and camp, the 1975 film sparked the midnight-movie phenomenon—audience call-backs, costumes, and prop kits turning repertory houses into weekly parties. Its celebration of outsiders made it a cornerstone of cult cinema in Japan as well as the West, sustained by late-show programs through the ’80s.

Poster design

A set of glossy crimson lips dominates center, ringed by halftone emerald bursts and a constellation of red-outlined star vignettes—Frank-N-Furter, Magenta, Columbia, Riff Raff, Rocky, and more. Dripping, blood-red English title lettering THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW crowns the sheet above the Japanese logotype 「ロッキー・ホラー・ショー」. The tease “He’s the hero—that’s right, the hero!!” pops mid-field, while a stylized tower and cloud bank anchor the base. Header copy reads 日本たばこ Theater By Night, and the authentic Eirin seal (映倫 63280・m) is printed at lower right—details unique to this Japanese 1988 campaign issue.
