This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster printed for the first Japanese release of The Shining / 「シャイニング」, Stanley Kubrick’s landmark 1980 psychological horror film starring Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Scatman Crothers, and Danny Lloyd.

Adapted from Stephen King’s novel, the film transforms the isolated Overlook Hotel into one of cinema’s most disturbing environments. This Japanese campaign design focuses on its most famous confrontation: Jack Torrance breaking through the bathroom door while Wendy recoils in terror.

Film background

Struggling writer and recovering alcoholic Jack Torrance accepts a winter position as caretaker of the remote Overlook Hotel, moving into the vast mountain resort with his wife, Wendy, and young son, Danny.

As heavy snow cuts the family off from the outside world, Danny’s psychic ability—known as “the shining”—reveals violent traces of the hotel’s past. Jack gradually becomes consumed by its supernatural influence, turning against his family as the building’s history begins to repeat itself.

Kubrick approaches the story through precise compositions, unnerving tracking shots, oppressive architecture, and an increasingly disorienting relationship between reality and hallucination.

The film was directed and produced by Stanley Kubrick, from a screenplay written with Diane Johnson, based on the novel by Stephen King.

At left, Jack Nicholson as Jack Torrance forces his face through the splintered bathroom door. His fixed eyes, exposed teeth, and ecstatic expression capture the character at the height of his madness.

At right, Shelley Duvall as Wendy Torrance presses herself against the wall, screaming while holding a kitchen knife. A blurred axe sweeps across the foreground, introducing immediate movement and danger into the otherwise tightly framed scene.

The juxtaposition places hunter and victim within a single continuous visual field, compressing the terror of the sequence into an exceptionally direct composition.

The large white headline reads:

Translated:

The lower white panel carries the original English logo:

Condition

Excellent condition, approaching Near Mint. An exceptionally well-preserved example retaining strong colour, clean white areas, sharp photographic detail, crisp typography, and superb overall display impact.

There are only extremely minor signs of age or handling consistent with an original Japanese theatrical poster from this period. It would be difficult to improve upon this example.
