"The Stranger (異邦人 / Lo straniero)" STB, Original Release Japanese Poster 1968, STB Tatekan Size (c. 51 × 145 cm) O352
This is an original Japanese STB (tatekan‑style two‑panel) poster printed in 1968 to promote The Stranger (異邦人 / Lo straniero)—Luchino Visconti’s adaptation of Albert Camus’s novel—starring Marcello Mastroianni and Anna Karina. The film opened in Japan on 21 September 1968 via Paramount Pictures Japan.
Tagline translations (as printed on the poster):
• Left vertical copy: 「*20世紀最高の文学 遂に映画化!!」 — “One of the 20th century’s greatest works of literature—finally on film!!”
• Right vertical copy: 「きらめく太陽がやきつける——アルジェの砂浜に銃声一発…そして更に四発…」 — “The blazing sun scorches—on Algiers’ beach, one gunshot… and then four more…”
• Small blue note: 「(カラー作品)」 — “Color feature.”
Key credits and notes:
• Director: Luchino Visconti • Producer: Dino De Laurentiis • Cinematography: Giuseppe Rotunno • Music: Piero Piccioni • Cast: Marcello Mastroianni, Anna Karina, Bernard Blier, and others.
Design notes:
A searing, sun‑drenched composition perfectly suited to Camus’s existential crime tale. The top panel places a blinding white sun in a red‑orange sky against a close, sweat‑sheened portrait of Mastroianni. The lower panel shows Meursault shackled on the beach, with a small vignette of the fatal confrontation at right. The large brushed kanji title 異邦人 anchors the design, with the Paramount mark and bilingual “THE STRANGER” credit along the foot.
This particular poster is a large‑format STB (tatekan)—approximately twice the height of a standard B2—and was typically displayed at cinema entrances. STB posters were printed in limited numbers and survive in small quantities, making them highly collectible.
