This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster produced for the first Japanese cinema release of Steve Binder’s landmark concert film The T.A.M.I. Show (ビート・パレード / Beat Parade). Filmed in 1964, the documentary opened theatrically in Japan on 14 May 1966, distributed domestically by Towa. The film brings together an extraordinary cross-section of American and British popular music at the precise moment when rock ’n’ roll, soul, Motown, surf music and the British Invasion were colliding.
Directed by Steve Binder, with music direction by Jack Nitzsche, the film features an extraordinary line-up including The Rolling Stones, James Brown and the Famous Flames, Chuck Berry, Marvin Gaye, The Supremes, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, The Beach Boys, Lesley Gore, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas, Jan and Dean, and The Barbarians. The performances were filmed at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in California in October 1964, creating what has become one of the defining visual records of mid-1960s popular music.
Poster design
A fantastic and exceptionally energetic Japan-specific first-release design, constructed as a dense Pop Art-style photographic collage of the performers and their audience. The upper half is dominated by enormous tinted portraits of a remarkably young Mick Jagger and James Brown, placing two of the film’s most electrifying performers directly at the centre of the Japanese campaign.
Behind them stretches a sea of screaming fans, while smaller images and blue English captions identify an extraordinary roll-call of artists: Marvin Gaye, The Beach Boys, Chuck Berry, Lesley Gore, The Supremes, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas, Jan and Dean, The Miracles, The Barbarians and The Rolling Stones.
Across the top, the red Japanese campaign copy promises:
「激突！爆発！すごい興奮！ダイナマイト・パンチでゆさぶるリズム旋風！」
— approximately “Collision! Explosion! Incredible excitement! A whirlwind of rhythm shaken by a dynamite punch!”
Just above the title appears the wonderfully period-specific line:
「リバプール・サウンズ対ヤンキー・ビート」
— “Liverpool Sound versus Yankee Beat.”
The enormous Japanese title ビート・パレード explodes across the lower half in bold blocks of red, blue, green and black, perfectly reflecting the exuberant graphic language of 1960s youth culture. The original Towa distribution mark and T.A.M.I. SHOW English title complete the design.
The film itself is especially celebrated for James Brown’s extraordinary performance, immediately followed in the running order by The Rolling Stones, creating one of the most famous sequences in concert-film history. The poster’s decision to place Jagger and Brown side-by-side at monumental scale therefore feels particularly apt in retrospect.
It is over 60 years old!
Condition
Very Good+. A highly attractive survivor for an original Japanese theatrical poster from 1966. The colour and photographic imagery remain strong, while the large central portraits, multi-coloured typography and overall composition continue to display extremely well.
The principal imagery remains strong and complete, and once framed, it will display excellently.
