This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster produced for the first Japanese cinema release of Michael Schultz’s musical fantasy Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (サージャント・ペパー), starring Peter Frampton and the Bee Gees. Produced in 1978, the film opened theatrically in Japan on 9 June 1979, distributed domestically by Paramount-CIC.
Produced by Robert Stigwood following the enormous success of Saturday Night Fever and Grease, the film builds a fantasy narrative around songs written by John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison, with George Martin serving as musical director. Alongside Frampton and Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb, its extraordinary musical cast includes Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, Earth, Wind & Fire, Billy Preston, and others, making the film an extraordinary document of late-1970s pop-culture excess.
Poster design
A wonderfully exuberant Japanese first-release design that deliberately recalls the crowded visual language of the Beatles’ original 1967 Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album while transforming it into a spectacular late-1970s movie-musical collage.
The huge psychedelic Sgt. Pepper’s logo dominates the upper section in vivid red, orange and yellow, immediately followed by the white Japanese サージャント・ペパー title against an intense blue field.
At the centre, Peter Frampton and the Bee Gees appear in the film’s distinctive red military-style uniforms, surrounded by an almost overwhelming assortment of performers, dancers, sets and comic visual details. The composition builds downward into a dense carnival of figures, architecture and oversized props, perfectly capturing the movie’s deliberately extravagant fantasy aesthetic.
Across the top, the Japanese campaign copy announces a:
“New fantastic musical” born from the immortal Beatles’ hit numbers
and promotes the combination of Bee Gees + Frampton + Beatles songs exploding across the screen.
The lower billing prominently highlights:

while the smaller credits reference the film’s remarkable musical ensemble, including Aerosmith, Alice Cooper and Earth, Wind & Fire.

Condition
Very Good. The poster retains strong, vivid colour, with the blue central field, red-and-yellow title treatment and densely layered photographic imagery remaining highly attractive.
There is significant soft wrinkling, waviness and general handling / storage creasing throughout the sheet, clearly visible from both the front and verso. Importantly, the sheet remains complete and the principal artwork, title and cast imagery remain strong.
