“The Ten Commandments” (十戒), Original Japanese 70mm Re-Release Movie Poster 1972, STB / Tatekan (c. 51 × 145 cm) — Ultra Rare K364
This is an original Japanese STB / tatekan signboard poster, formed from two matching B2 panels, produced for the December 1972 Japanese 70mm theatrical re-release of The Ten Commandments—Cecil B. DeMille’s monumental 1956 biblical epic starring Charlton Heston, Yul Brynner, Anne Baxter, Edward G. Robinson, Yvonne De Carlo, and John Derek. Prominently marked “70mm,” “Super Stereo Sound / Technicolor,” and 「パラマウント映画 CIC配給」—“A Paramount Picture, distributed by CIC”—this is a spectacular surviving example of Japan’s premium-format roadshow advertising.
Film background
Released in 1956, The Ten Commandments was DeMille’s final film and an expansive partial remake of his own 1923 silent production. It follows Moses from his adoption into the Egyptian royal household and rivalry with Rameses through exile, divine revelation, the Exodus, the parting of the Red Sea, and the receiving of the tablets on Mount Sinai. Photographed in Technicolor and VistaVision, the film became one of Hollywood’s defining large-scale biblical spectacles. It won the Academy Award for Special Effects and received six additional nominations, including Best Picture; it was later added to the United States National Film Registry in 1999.
Poster design
A magnificent, high-impact Japan-only 70mm revival composition built to exploit the tatekan’s extreme vertical proportions. The enormous vermilion title 十戒 dominates the upper section, framed by sweeping orange lines and intersected by shafts of divine light. Immediately beneath it, the oversized 70mm designation announces the premium theatrical presentation, while the uppermost inscription reads 「超ステレオ・サウンド■テクニカラー」—“Super Stereo Sound / Technicolor.”
Charlton Heston’s Moses towers across both panels, white-haired and bearded, holding the two stone tablets in a commanding full-length portrait. The diagonal tablets, beams of light, and monumental typography create a powerful sense of divine authority and physical scale. The large orange slogan on the right declares:
「映画史上空前のスケール!雄大豪壮のスペクタクル!」
Translation: “An unprecedented scale in motion-picture history—a vast and magnificent spectacle!”
The central yellow campaign copy reads:
「民族の生命を賭けたモーゼとファラオの宿命の対立!海が真二つに割れ、自由への道がいま開かれる。壮大なクライマックス、わきあがる感動!」
Translation: “Moses and Pharaoh clash in a fateful confrontation with the life of a people at stake! The sea is split in two and the road to freedom opens at last—a magnificent climax and an overwhelming surge of emotion!”
The lower panel opens into the film’s most celebrated image: the parting of the Red Sea, with immense walls of water framing the fleeing Hebrews and pursuing Egyptian chariots. Along the bottom is a richly coloured cast gallery featuring John Derek, Anne Baxter, Edward G. Robinson, and Yvonne De Carlo, balanced by an imposing full-length portrait of Yul Brynner as Pharaoh Rameses.
About STB (Tatekan) posters
STBs, or tatekans, are tall, two-panel Japanese cinema signboard posters measuring approximately 51.5 × 145.6 cm—about 20.3 × 57.3 inches. Each consists of two separate B2 sheets, individually measuring approximately 51.5 × 72.8 cm, designed to be joined vertically at the cinema. This distinctively Japanese format allowed the panels to be distributed compactly and assembled on-site for prominent theatre and signboard display. Because both matching sections had to remain together, complete vintage sets are considerably more difficult to find than conventional single-sheet Japanese B2 posters.
