“The Terminator” / 「ターミネーター」, Original Japanese Home Video Promotional Poster c.1980s, James Cameron / Arnold Schwarzenegger / ASCII, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) D262

Sale price $250.00

This is an original Japanese B2 promotional poster for The Terminator / 「ターミネーター」, the landmark 1984 science-fiction action film directed by James Cameron and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

This specific poster is especially desirable because it is not the standard Japanese theatrical release poster, but rather an original Japanese home video promotional poster, identifiable by the ASCII logo printed at lower left. As such, it belongs to the film’s early Japanese video-release campaign and represents a rarer and more specialized form of Terminator ephemera.

Film background
Written and directed by James Cameron, The Terminator follows a cyborg assassin sent back in time from a machine-dominated future to murder Sarah Connor, whose unborn son will one day lead humanity’s resistance. Sent to protect her is Kyle Reese, a soldier from the future, and together they are drawn into one of the defining science-fiction thrillers of the 1980s.

The film stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, Michael Biehn, and Paul Winfield, and is now regarded as one of the foundational modern sci-fi action films. Produced on a modest budget but executed with extraordinary force and visual confidence, The Terminator established Cameron as a major filmmaker and helped cement Schwarzenegger’s status as a global action icon.

Its influence has been immense: in visual style, in the portrayal of mechanized menace, in time-travel narrative structure, and in the fusion of horror, noir, science fiction, and action. It remains one of the essential films of 1980s popular cinema.

Poster design
This Japanese B2 poster is dominated by a striking close-up image of Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator, shown in his signature black leather jacket and dark sunglasses, holding the iconic AMT Hardballer .45 Long Slide pistol fitted with a laser sight.

The image is set against a deep black background, broken by diagonal red laser-like beams radiating from behind the figure, intensifying the futuristic and menacing tone. The right lens of the sunglasses bears the glowing red designation “CSM-101”, a memorable graphic detail that reinforces the machine identity of the character.

At the top, the English title THE TERMINATOR appears in a large metallic purple-silver futuristic font, with the Japanese title 「ターミネーター」 beneath in a matching style. Between them sits the white billing block, which includes a now-famous typographic curiosity: Michael Biehn’s name is misspelled as “MICHALE BIEHN”. Far from detracting, this sort of original-period printing anomaly is part of the charm and authenticity of vintage poster material.

The ASCII logo at lower left is especially important. ASCII Corporation was active in Japanese media and publishing and handled certain western video-related releases, and its presence clearly indicates that this sheet was produced to promote the film’s Japanese home video release, rather than theatrical exhibition.
