“The Terminator” (ターミネーター), Original Japanese First-Release Movie Poster 1985, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) J86
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed for the first Japanese theatrical release of The Terminator (ターミネーター), James Cameron’s landmark 1984 science-fiction action thriller. Released in Japan in 1985, the film introduced one of cinema’s most iconic screen figures: Arnold Schwarzenegger as the relentless T-800 Terminator.
Original Japanese posters for The Terminator are highly collectible, and this example is especially desirable for its bold, high-impact Japanese campaign design. It captures the film’s cold, mechanical menace while presenting Schwarzenegger at the exact moment his image became inseparable from the role.
Film background
Directed by James Cameron, The Terminator stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, Michael Biehn, Linda Hamilton, Paul Winfield, and Lance Henriksen. The film follows a cyborg assassin sent from a machine-ruled future to 1984 Los Angeles to kill Sarah Connor, whose unborn son will one day lead the human resistance against Skynet. Sent back to protect her is Kyle Reese, a soldier from the same devastated future.
Combining tech-noir atmosphere, lean action filmmaking, time-travel mythology, and Stan Winston’s special-effects work, The Terminator became one of the defining science-fiction films of the 1980s. Its influence on action cinema, cyberpunk imagery, and popular ideas of artificial intelligence remains immense.
Poster design
This is a superb and highly recognisable Japanese release design. The composition is dominated by a powerful close-up of Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator, wearing black sunglasses and a leather jacket, gripping a pistol upright beside his face. The reflected red digital text across the sunglasses, together with the targeting graphics and red-black computer-style background, gives the poster a cold, technological atmosphere perfectly suited to the film.
Across the top, the Japanese tagline reads:
冷酷!非情!残虐!史上最強〈悪〉のヒーロー!!
“Cold-blooded! Merciless! Brutal! The strongest ‘evil’ hero in history!!”
The large red actor credit アーノルド・シュワルツェネッガー sits prominently above the metallic Japanese title logo ターミネーター, which is rendered in sharp silver lettering with a futuristic chrome effect. At the bottom, a smaller action still shows a night-time pursuit scene, reinforcing the film’s urban, high-speed thriller atmosphere.
The lower credits identify the film as an Orion Pictures release, with James Cameron credited as director. The overall design is pure mid-1980s Japanese sci-fi marketing: aggressive, graphic, and immediately displayable.
