“The Thing” (遊星からの物体X), Original Japanese First Release Movie Poster 1982, B3 Size (c. 36 × 51.5 cm) O643
This is an original Japanese B3 poster issued in Japan for the first domestic theatrical release of John Carpenter’s The Thing (1982)—starring Kurt Russell, with Wilford Brimley, Keith David, Donald Moffat, and an all-male ensemble cast. A defining work of paranoia-horror set in Antarctica, The Thing has become one of the most revered genre films of the late 20th century. The film opened theatrically in Japan on 13 November 1982.
Poster design
A striking, concept-heavy Japanese design that differs dramatically from the minimalist “glowing face” one-sheet: the Antarctic ice sheet becomes a vast, ominous dome, split open by a violent crack as something ancient pushes upward from beneath. A ribbon of character portraits runs across the centre like an identification strip—faces reduced to witnesses in a sealed world—while the enormous red title 遊星からの物体X (“The Thing from Another World X”) crashes across the bottom in classic Japanese exploitation typography. The tagline across the top—「南極大陸の氷の下から宇宙最大の恐怖が甦える!」 (“From beneath the Antarctic ice, the greatest terror in the universe rises again!”)—perfectly sells the film’s dread and scale.
As with many Japanese B3 issues, the reverse is fully printed with dense Japanese text and still imagery (programme-style synopsis/cast/features), making it especially desirable as original theatrical marketing ephemera rather than a standard one-sided poster.
