“Three Resurrected Drunkards” (帰って来たヨッパライ), Original Japanese Movie Poster 1968, Nagisa Ōshima / The Folk Crusaders, B2 Size (c. 51 × 73 cm) — T68
This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster for the 1968 first release of Three Resurrected Drunkards, originally titled 帰って来たヨッパライ (Kaette Kita Yopparai). Released on 30 March 1968, the film brings together Nagisa Ōshima’s experimental cinema and the popular music of The Folk Crusaders, an association vividly reflected in its psychedelic poster design.
Directed by Nagisa Ōshima, the film stars Folk Crusaders members Kazuhiko Katō, Osamu Kitayama and Norihiko Hashida, alongside Mako Midori and Kei Satō. Taking its title from the group’s hit song, it follows three students whose clothes disappear while they are swimming. Wearing the garments left behind, they are mistaken for undocumented Koreans and drawn into an increasingly surreal pursuit. Beneath its comic surface, the film examines prejudice, national identity and Japan’s treatment of its Korean minority.
The design combines photographic portraits with elongated cartoon bodies, dressing its smiling protagonists in striped, checked and brightly coloured outfits. Mako Midori appears at the upper right in an illustrated red tunic, while a haloed, winged figure holding a book occupies the upper-left border. Winding shapes, flowers, a small skull and oversized sunglasses fill the surrounding decorative frame.
The Japanese title sweeps across the upper half in purple, blue, red and pink, its curling letterforms echoing the fluid patterns around the edges. Ōshima’s director credit follows the same rising diagonal, while orange lettering prominently advertises The Folk Crusaders’ film debut. The lower credits identify Sōzōsha as the production company and Shochiku as distributor.
The promotional line above the title reads:
「映画の常識をぶち破る大傑作」
“A masterpiece that shatters the conventions of cinema.”
The playful portrait collage, exuberant lettering and densely illustrated borders make this a distinctive meeting of film publicity and 1960s pop graphics. It is particularly appealing for collectors of Nagisa Ōshima, Japanese New Wave cinema, The Folk Crusaders and psychedelic poster design.
