“The Truman Show” (トゥルーマン・ショー), Original Japanese First-Release Movie Poster 1998, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) S148

Sale price $150.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical release poster, printed for the 1998 first Japanese cinema release of Peter Weir’s acclaimed satirical drama The Truman Show (トゥルーマン・ショー), starring Jim Carrey in one of the defining performances of his career.

Released in Japan on 14 November 1998, the film follows Truman Burbank, an apparently ordinary man who is completely unaware that his entire life—from birth onward—is being staged and broadcast around the world as an enormously successful television program. Everyone around him is an actor, his hometown is an immense studio set, and millions of viewers watch his every waking moment.

Poster design

A superb conceptual design that communicates the film’s extraordinary premise almost instantly.

At the centre is an enormous metropolitan building wrapped in a gigantic curved video screen, broadcasting an intimate image of Jim Carrey as Truman asleep in bed. The contrast is wonderfully unsettling: one man’s most private moment is magnified to monumental scale for public consumption.

Above the screen, glowing red lettering reads:

LIVE

while beneath Truman appears the digital counter:

DAY 010,909

emphasising that Truman’s existence has effectively been transformed into a continuous television broadcast from birth.

Below the building, an immense crowd completely fills the surrounding city streets, all gathered beneath the screen to watch Truman. A helicopter circles above the rooftop while a bird passes across the enormous display, further exaggerating the surreal scale of the fictional television phenomenon.

Across the very top appears the striking English question:

DO YOU KNOW ME?!

The oversized Japanese title:

トゥルーマン・ショー

is integrated directly into the architecture of the building, while the Japanese campaign line below reads:

「全世界に放映中。知らぬは……」

— approximately:

“Broadcasting to the entire world. The only one who doesn’t know is…”

Directly beneath appears Jim Carrey’s name:

ジム・キャリー

with each character dramatically spaced across the width of the poster.

The combination of monochromatic city photography, the enormous television screen, stark black typography and restrained red digital lettering gives this Japanese campaign design exceptional graphic impact. It is both immediately readable as a film poster and a remarkably prescient visual commentary on surveillance, celebrity and mass-media consumption.

Film significance

Directed by Peter Weir from a screenplay by Andrew Niccol, The Truman Show became one of the most acclaimed films of 1998 and marked an important turning point in Jim Carrey’s career, demonstrating his ability to move beyond broad comedy into a more nuanced dramatic performance.

The film’s central idea proved remarkably prophetic. Released before reality television became a dominant global entertainment format and long before social media normalised the public documentation of everyday life, The Truman Show explored themes of surveillance, manufactured reality, personal privacy, celebrity culture, free will and the commodification of human experience.

Its cultural influence has been enormous—the phrase “Truman Show” has itself entered everyday language as shorthand for the unsettling feeling that one’s surroundings or experiences are somehow staged or observed.

The film also stars Laura Linney, Noah Emmerich, Natascha McElhone and Ed Harris, with Harris portraying Christof, the creator and controlling architect of Truman’s artificial world.

It is over 27 years old!

Condition

Excellent+. A particularly strong surviving example with excellent colour, crisp photographic detail and very clean overall presentation.

The subtle monochrome cityscape remains sharp, while the warm tones of Truman’s image, bright white Japanese typography and red LIVE display retain excellent contrast. There are only very minor signs of age or handling, with nothing that materially detracts from the design.

Once framed, it will display exceptionally well.
