“The Wanderers” (ワンダラーズ), Original Japanese Movie Poster 1980, First Release, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O98
This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1980 for the first domestic theatrical release of The Wanderers (ワンダラーズ), directed by Philip Kaufman and jointly distributed in Japan by Shochiku and Fuji Eiga. Japanese first-issue sheets for this Bronx coming-of-age cult classic are increasingly collectible.
Film background
Adapted from Richard Price’s 1974 novel, the film follows the Italian-American teen gang “The Wanderers” in 1963 New York—friendships, rivalries, and rites of passage unfolding against a backdrop of social change. With a breakout young cast (Ken Wahl, John Friedrich, Karen Allen, Tony Ganios) and a wall-to-wall early-’60s oldies soundtrack, it has grown into a beloved portrait of youth culture.
Poster design
A terrific mixed-media one-sheet: at top, a photographic still of the boys in matching jackets outside a Bronx storefront; below, a painted tableau of the crew seen from behind—“The Wanderers” emblazoned across their jackets—surrounded by vignettes of classmates, a jukebox, and a street-corner scrap. The bold red katakana title 「ワンダラーズ」 commands the center, with distributor credits and the Eirin seal along the footer—hallmarks of a first-issue Japanese country sheet.
