Sale price $150.00

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster for The Way We Were / 「追憶」, printed for the film’s first Japanese theatrical release campaign in the early 1970s.

Directed by Sydney Pollack and starring Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford, The Way We Were remains one of the defining romantic dramas of the period: a melancholy story of love, memory, politics, and incompatibility, set across the changing social landscape of mid-20th-century America.

Film background
Written by Arthur Laurents, with music by Marvin Hamlisch, The Way We Were follows the relationship between Katie Morosky and Hubbell Gardiner — two people drawn together by deep attraction but separated by temperament, politics, ambition, and time.

The film became a major success and is especially remembered for the title song, performed by Barbra Streisand, which became one of the signature romantic themes of 1970s cinema. Redford and Streisand’s pairing remains one of the most iconic screen romances of the decade.

Poster design
This Japanese B2 poster features the highly desirable “beach style” design, centred on the film’s famous shoreline imagery. Robert Redford and Barbra Streisand walk together barefoot along the beach, framed by a vast blue-and-white sky and muted shoreline.

At the bottom, the Japanese title 「追憶」 appears in large red brush-style lettering, with the English title THE WAY WE WERE printed at lower right. The smaller furigana 「ついおく」 appears beside the title, giving the reading of the Japanese release name.

The vertical Japanese tagline at upper left reads:

「あの頃は すべてが たいせつに思えた 愛でさえも……」
“In those days, everything seemed precious — even love…”

The design is elegant and emotionally restrained, perfectly suited to the film’s tone of nostalgia and romantic loss. The pale sky, open beach, and intimate central figures give the poster a quiet, atmospheric quality that distinguishes it from more conventional romantic-drama advertising.

Release identification
This poster should be catalogued as an original Japanese first-release B2 theatrical poster for The Way We Were.

The lower credits identify the film as a colour / Panavision release and credit Sydney Pollack, Arthur Laurents, Marvin Hamlisch, Barbra Streisand, and Robert Redford, with the Columbia Pictures and Eirin marks printed at lower right.

Condition
Excellent condition. Please review the photograph carefully, as it shows the exact poster for sale.

The poster presents beautifully, with soft blue sky tones, strong red title lettering, clean photographic imagery, and excellent overall display impact. This design is particularly prone to visible ageing because of its pale sky and light background, making well-preserved examples increasingly difficult to find.
