This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster for the 1998 first Japanese release of Gattaca, released in Japan as ガタカ. Written and directed by Andrew Niccol in his feature directorial debut, the 1997 science-fiction drama stars Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman and Jude Law, with music by Michael Nyman. In a future where genetic selection determines opportunity, Vincent Freeman refuses to accept the limitations imposed upon him. Assuming another man’s genetic identity, he pursues his ambition to travel into space, risking exposure as a murder investigation brings his carefully constructed life under scrutiny.
The design is arranged in three horizontal photographic panels, separated by pale bands. Above, Ethan Hawke appears against a cool blue background of curved architectural forms. His alert, sideways gaze establishes a mood of uncertainty that carries through the composition.
