“Tootsie” (トッツィー), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 1983, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) Q215

Sale price $100.00

This is an original Japanese B2 poster printed in 1983 for the first theatrical release of Tootsie (トッツィー), Sydney Pollack’s celebrated comedy-drama starring Dustin Hoffman, Jessica Lange, Teri Garr, Dabney Coleman, Charles Durning, Bill Murray, and Sydney Pollack. Distributed in Japan by Columbia Pictures, the film became one of the defining American comedies of the early 1980s and remains one of Hoffman’s most admired performances.

Original Japanese posters for Tootsie are highly collectible, and this example is especially desirable for its clean, award-focused Japanese campaign design, created to emphasise the film’s enormous critical success.

Film background
Released in 1982 and brought to Japanese audiences in 1983, Tootsie follows struggling actor Michael Dorsey, who disguises himself as actress Dorothy Michaels in order to win a role on a television soap opera. What begins as an act of professional desperation becomes a sharp comedy about performance, identity, gender expectations, and personal integrity.

The film was a major critical and commercial success, earning 10 nominations at the 55th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor for Dustin Hoffman, Best Supporting Actress for Jessica Lange and Teri Garr, and Best Director for Sydney Pollack. Jessica Lange won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, and the film also received major recognition from the Golden Globes and leading critics’ associations.

Poster design
This Japanese B2 uses a wonderfully direct, accolade-led layout. The design is built around the film’s central comic transformation: at left, Dustin Hoffman as Michael Dorsey stands casually with arms folded; at right, Hoffman appears as Dorothy Michaels, smiling in a glittering red evening dress. The contrast between the two figures immediately communicates the film’s premise with clarity and wit.

At the top, Hoffman’s name ダスティン・ホフマン appears in pink above the bold blue Japanese title トッツィー, enclosed by a loose pink brushstroke oval. The centre of the poster is dominated by the announcement:

「第55回アカデミー賞 10部門ノミネート!」
“55th Academy Awards — nominated in 10 categories!”

Below this, the poster lists the major nomination categories, including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Song, Best Editing, and Best Sound. Further blue bullet points highlight additional recognition from the Golden Globes, National Society of Film Critics, New York Film Critics Circle, and Los Angeles Film Critics Association.

The lower section includes the small English Tootsie logo, Japanese cast and production credits, and the official Columbia Pictures / copyright markings. The result is a highly elegant Japanese campaign poster: restrained, funny, and perfectly tailored to present the film as both a popular comedy and a serious awards contender.
