“Triads: The Inside Story” (黒社会), Original Japanese First-Release Movie Poster 1990, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) — O221
This is an original Japanese B2 poster produced for the 1990 Japanese theatrical release of Triads: The Inside Story, Taylor Wong’s Hong Kong crime drama starring Chow Yun-fat and Roy Cheung. Its striking photographic composition captures the tension and divided loyalties of Hong Kong gangster cinema.
Film background
Originally released in Hong Kong in 1989, the film follows a businessman who returns from America after the assassination of his father, a powerful triad leader. Despite his reluctance to inherit the family’s criminal responsibilities, he becomes entangled in a dangerous struggle over leadership, loyalty, and revenge.
Chow Yun-fat brings considerable presence to a story that examines the pressures of family obligation within the violent world of organised crime. The film belongs to the remarkable period when Hong Kong crime cinema established an international following.
Poster design
A dramatic Japanese composition built around enormous portraits of Chow Yun-fat and Roy Cheung, divided by a sharp diagonal red line. Beneath them, a group of suited gang members emerges from an orange-red glow, casting long shadows across the pale background.
The oversized black title 黒社会 gives the lower section exceptional impact, while vertical Japanese copy frames the central imagery. A small illustrated dragon and the red English title complete the design. The contrast between the spacious cream ground, brooding portraits, and fiery colours makes this an especially striking display piece.
