“Public Enemy No.1” (ジャック・メスリーヌ), Original Release Japanese Movie Poster 2009 (film ©2008), Part 1 ノワール編, B2 Size (51 × 73 cm) O807
This is an original Japanese poster printed in 2009 for the first Japanese theatrical release of Jacques Mesrine: Public Enemy No.1 – Part 1 (Noir).
Jacques Mesrine (ジャック・メスリーヌ) is the first chapter of a two-part French crime epic dramatising the rise of Jacques Mesrine, the notorious real-life criminal who became a headline obsession in Canada and France during the 1960s–70s. Part 1 traces Mesrine’s early trajectory—returning from war, falling into organised crime, and escalating through robberies and escapes until he begins to be branded “Public Enemy No.1.”
The Japanese copy across the top sets the tone with stark specificity:
「1959年、犯罪王の覚醒。32回の銀行強盗、4回の脱獄を繰り返した男。」
(“1959: the awakening of the king of crime. A man who repeated 32 bank robberies and four prison escapes.”)
The poster also highlights the film’s awards attention—most notably Vincent Cassel’s major recognition (including a César Best Actor win for Mesrine) and his Best Actor award at the Tokyo International Film Festival.
Poster design
A powerful, gritty photographic design built around an intense close-up portrait of Vincent Cassel with a pistol, contrasted with a cool, enigmatic female figure in sunglasses—set against a textured, sepia-toned palette. The Japanese title ジャック・メスリーヌ is rendered in bold brush-style lettering, with the subtitle Part 1 ノワール編 stamped in a vivid blue panel. The lower section features the large English title PUBLIC ENEMY NO.1 over chain-link fencing—an excellent example of late-2000s Japanese design for European crime cinema, and a striking piece once framed.
It is over 16 years old!
