“You Only Live Twice” (007は二度死ぬ), 1976 Japanese Re-Release Movie Poster, B2 Size (51 x 73cm) H87 A
This is an original Japanese B2 poster issued in Japan for the 1976 theatrical re-release of You Only Live Twice (1967), Lewis Gilbert’s fifth James Bond film—starring Sean Connery as 007, alongside Akiko Wakabayashi, Mie Hama, Tetsurō Tanba, and Donald Pleasence as the iconic Ernst Stavro Blofeld. One of the most culturally and visually distinctive entries of the Connery era, the film’s Japan-set storyline, volcano lair mythology, and “bigger-than-life” set pieces helped define Bond as global spectacle.
Poster design
A superb, high-drama Japanese campaign built around space-age threat and Cold War scale. Connery’s close-up dominates the centre, Walther held to his cheek in a poised, assessing stance, while the background explodes into the film’s signature imagery: the rocket launch / spacecraft rising within a cavernous lair structure, a ring of industrial scaffolding and command platforms, and kinetic action vignettes that spill across sea and sky—Little Nellie (the gyrocopter) diving through the lower left, aerial pursuit and explosions, and a tense interior confrontation scene. The typography is exceptionally strong: the massive red “007” anchors the composition, with the Japanese title 「007は二度死ぬ」 (“007 Dies Twice”) in bold red beneath—graphic, iconic, and immediately recognisable as vintage Japanese Bond marketing. A striking display piece that captures the film’s unique blend of espionage, technology, and operatic villainy.
