“Zatoichi the Outlaw” (座頭市牢破り), Original Japanese Movie Poster 1967, Shintaro Katsu / Rentaro Mikuni, B2 Size (c. 51 × 73 cm) — T79

This is an original Japanese B2 theatrical poster for the 1967 first release of Zatoichi the Outlaw, originally titled Zatōichi Rōyaburi. Released on 12 August 1967, the film pairs Shintaro Katsu with Rentaro Mikuni in a story of deception, exploitation and revenge. This dramatic design brings the two stars together against a background of crashing waves.

The sixteenth entry in the series, the film also marked the first production from Katsu Productions, made in collaboration with Daiei. The blue lettering beside the title explicitly advertises this milestone, making the poster a particularly interesting record of Katsu’s expanding role in the production of his signature series.

Directed by Satsuo Yamamoto, with cinematography by Kazuo Miyagawa, the film follows Zatoichi into a town where impoverished villagers are caught between rival gambling establishments. Mikuni plays Asagoro, whose apparent generosity conceals a ruthless scheme. The story combines swordplay with a pointed examination of debt, manipulation and the abuse of power.

Katsu dominates the foreground, wearing a pale blue robe with his drawn blade extending diagonally across the composition. His tense expression and twisted stance convey the physical concentration of Zatoichi’s fighting style. Behind him, Mikuni raises his sword overhead, his striped kimono introducing a contrasting pattern. Foaming surf and dark rocks fill the upper background, heightening the sense of confrontation.

The enormous red title, 「座頭市牢破り」, runs down the right side in rough brush lettering edged in white. Green credits identify the stars, producer and director, while pink cast lettering stretches across the bottom. The Daiei emblem occupies the upper-left corner.

The black promotional copy reads:

「逆斬り！曲斬り！おどり斬り！座頭市の痛快さをこの一篇に結集！」
“Reverse slashes! Trick slashes! Dancing slashes! All the thrills of Zatoichi brought together in this one film!”

The close confrontation between the two leads, energetic sword diagonals and vivid typography give this poster a strong presence. Its connection to Katsu Productions’ inaugural film adds particular appeal for collectors of Shintaro Katsu, Rentaro Mikuni, the Zatoichi series and Japanese swordplay cinema.

Condition: Excellent.

Light fold lines, handling creases and minor marks are visible, particularly on the reverse. The front retains vivid colour and strong overall presentation.
