Original Japanese Shintaro Katsu Movie Posters

Shintaro Katsu (勝新太郎, 1931–1997) was one of the defining stars of Japanese cinema, celebrated for his extraordinary screen presence and his iconic portrayal of Zatoichi, the blind swordsman. Across a prolific career as an actor, producer and director, Katsu became closely associated with samurai cinema, yakuza films and some of the most enduring Japanese genre productions of the 1960s and 1970s.

The Zatoichi series became Katsu’s defining achievement, beginning with The Tale of Zatoichi (1962) and developing into one of the longest-running and most celebrated character franchises in Japanese film history. His portrayal combined humour, humanity and explosive swordsmanship, creating a character recognised by audiences throughout Japan and internationally.

Japan Poster Shop’s collection brings together original Japanese Shintaro Katsu movie posters, with particular strength in the Zatoichi series. Our holdings include rare first-release B2 theatrical posters, alternative designs and other original promotional material from the height of Katsu’s career.

Original Japanese posters from the 1960s and 1970s are increasingly difficult to acquire, particularly first-release examples in excellent condition. Their bold typography, dynamic period artwork and connection to one of Japan’s most important screen icons make them highly desirable to collectors of samurai cinema and vintage Japanese film advertising.

Each poster is carefully sourced and individually catalogued in Japan, with attention to authenticity, original release history, format, condition and rarity.
