Original Japanese Stanley Kubrick Movie Posters

Explore Japan Poster Shop’s exceptional collection of original Japanese Stanley Kubrick movie posters, featuring rare first-release theatrical artwork, historically significant promotional designs and exceptionally scarce large-format advertising from the career of one of cinema’s most influential filmmakers.

Stanley Kubrick (1928–1999) occupies a singular position in the history of twentieth-century cinema. Celebrated for his meticulous compositions, technical innovation, uncompromising artistic vision and extraordinary command of visual storytelling, Kubrick created a body of work that continues to influence filmmakers, artists and designers around the world.

Our collection encompasses original Japanese theatrical posters spanning Kubrick’s early filmmaking career through to his final masterpiece, Eyes Wide Shut (1999), including rare first-release examples, alternative Japanese designs, advance promotional material and unusual advertising formats.

Of particular significance are our holdings of early Japanese theatrical posters for Kubrick’s films, including material associated with The Killing (1956), Paths of Glory (1957), Spartacus (1960), Lolita (1962) and Dr. Strangelove (1964). Original Japanese first-release posters from this formative period are particularly desirable, with surviving examples in exceptional condition becoming increasingly difficult to acquire.

Our collection also celebrates Kubrick’s landmark 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), one of the most influential achievements in science-fiction cinema. Its Japanese theatrical campaigns produced extraordinary poster artwork, including distinctive illustrated designs, rare first-release formats and large-scale advertising material that reflects the film’s monumental visual ambition.

Other major works represented within Kubrick’s filmography include A Clockwork Orange (1971), Barry Lyndon (1975), The Shining (1980), Full Metal Jacket (1987) and Eyes Wide Shut (1999). Japanese theatrical posters for these films are especially admired for their distinctive compositions, bold typography and alternative interpretations of some of cinema’s most recognisable imagery.

Japan Poster Shop has assembled an extensive specialist selection encompassing original Japanese B2 and B1 theatrical posters, exceptionally rare STB Tatekan formats, large-format B0 posters, monumental theatrical billboards, advance promotional designs and unusual first-release variants.

The STB Tatekan format (approximately 51 × 145 cm) and the larger B0 and billboard formats are of particular interest to serious collectors. Originally intended for prominent theatrical advertising, these large-scale posters were frequently produced in smaller quantities, exposed to demanding display conditions and subsequently discarded. Surviving original examples can therefore be exceptionally scarce.

Japanese theatrical advertising for Kubrick’s films occupies an important place in international poster collecting. The Japanese campaigns frequently employed distinctive illustrations, alternative layouts, dramatic photographic compositions and bold Japanese typography, creating designs that differ substantially from their American and European counterparts.

From the early black-and-white crime dramas to the extraordinary visual worlds of 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange and The Shining, these posters document the evolution of Kubrick’s filmmaking and its reception in Japan.

The rarest surviving examples represent important artefacts of cinema history, Japanese graphic design and twentieth-century visual culture, of particular interest to serious private collectors, specialist archives and institutions.

Every poster offered by Japan Poster Shop is an authentic original, carefully sourced in Japan and individually catalogued. We do not sell reproductions. All posters are accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity, with worldwide DHL Express shipping available from our gallery in Tokyo.
