Teruo Ishii (石井輝男, 1924–2005) was a prolific Japanese filmmaker whose extraordinary career encompassed yakuza films, crime thrillers, science fiction, horror, period dramas and ero guro (erotic-grotesque) cinema. Often described as the King of Cult in Japan, Ishii developed a highly individual visual style characterised by striking compositions, provocative subject matter and an adventurous approach to genre filmmaking.

Beginning his career at Shintoho, Ishii directed a wide range of productions, including entries in the Super Giant science-fiction series, before establishing himself as a major figure in Japanese crime cinema. His influential Abashiri Prison (1965) helped consolidate the screen persona of Ken Takakura and contributed to the development of the modern Japanese yakuza film.

During the late 1960s, Ishii became particularly associated with Toei’s ero guro and exploitation productions, directing visually extraordinary and often controversial films such as Shogun’s Joy of Torture (1968), Horrors of Malformed Men (1969) and Blind Woman’s Curse (1970). These works have subsequently attracted considerable international interest among collectors and historians of Japanese cult cinema.
